Fenton officials passed the chicken ordinance in September.
For all the squawking about chickens in the city of Fenton this summer, there has only been one application submitted to house the birds. City of Fenton Building & Zoning Secretary Linda Davis stated that one application has been approved since the chicken ordinance was passed in September. The cost of a permit is $25 and there is an annual inspection cost of $25. In September, after spirited public comment and a failed attempt to allow six chickens, Fenton City Council voted 6-1 to allow residents to keep up to three chickens, with restrictions. When it comes to raising healthy chickens, Frank and Laura Kay Jones wrote the book. Well, the Fenton Township couple hasn’t written it yet, but they plan to. While Fenton works on a proposal for allowing chickens in the city, the Jones’ have been handling pasture-raised poultry for 25 years and at their peak had 2,700 fowl. They were sending eggs and chickens across the country to New York City, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and even Star Wars creator George Lucas. “We couldn’t raise enough of them,” Frank said. The couple since moved from Durand to Fenton Township and now raise chickens for themselves and family. They have about 100 meat birds, 16 egg-layers and one rooster to watch over them. Council debates number of hens and roofing outdoor pens; Planning Commission and city attorney to review proposed ordinance.
Fenton is hatching a new ordinance that would allow chicken keeping in some residential areas of the city. Council discussed a proposed ordinance at Monday's work session, and the proposal will now go to the Planning Commission and city attorney for their input, City Manager Lynn Markland said. Zoning Administrator Brad Hissong said he's been in business for 40 years, and it's the first time he's dealt with chickens. He and city planning consultant Carmine Avantini, with the city attorney's review, developed a proposed ordinance. Other Michigan cities have ordinances allowing the keeping of chickens, Avantini said.
