Fenton Jinglefest is a Hit on Saturday

Lighted parade, photos with Santa, Jingle Jog, fireworks, s'mores and more highlight annual Fenton Regional Chamber of Commerce event.

Fenton’s Jinglefest on Saturday drew people from near and far, and the balmy (for December) weather certainly didn’t decrease attendance. Cheryl Jarding, of Rapid City, South Dakota, who was visiting Lisa DeLavergne, of Fenton, made Jinglefest part of her trip. The two ran the 5K Jingle Jog together, with Jarding winning her age group and DeLavergne taking fourth in hers. Jarding said Jingle Jog was very well-organized. “I like to  run on black top, so that was really good,” she said of the course. DeLarvergne liked the mild weather for the race. It’s not the only race they’ve run together. “She runs half marathons,” DeLavergne said. They ran a 30K together in Wyoming through the Big Horn mountains, Jarding added. “That was an adventure,” …

Officials Break Ground on $2 Million Fenton Community Center Project

The addition will include two studios dedicated to arts and culture. Also included in the project, Will be improved handicapped accessibility to the building and restroom facilities.

The expansion of the Fenton Community & Cultural Center has begun. City officials hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday and dug their shovels into the dirt for the expansion to the historic building. “This is a historic event," city manager Lynn Markland said. "It's been a long time in anticipation." The initial phase of the combined renovation/addition will cost $2 million. The addition will include two studios dedicated to arts and culture. Also included in the project, Will  be improved handicapped accessibility to the building and restroom facilities. I don't currently use the community center since we just moved to town, but I'm excited to take advantage of all that it offers. I love that they are adding on to support art and culture though. Between this and the Fire Station, downtown will likely see an increase of traffic.   more ›

Man to Man Sale Next Saturday at Fenton Community Center

Southern Lakes Parks & Recreation is looking for buyers and sellers.

Wanted: Buyers and sellers at Southern Lakes Parks & Recreation's (SLPR) Man to Man Sale. It's a garage sale, geared toward men, said Director Vince Paris, of SLPR. It will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29, in the parking lot of the Fenton Community & Cultural Center. Men can sell out of their car, truck, van or trailer, or bring their own table or canopy. Men can sell tools, boats, trailers, building materials, bikes, clothes, sports equipment, lawn and garden equipment, electronics, record albums, trading cards, and more. No weapons will be allowed, including guns, knives and ammunition. The event will take place rain or shine, and spaces for sellers are $10 in advance or $15 on the day of the event. Southern Lakes Parks & Rec Weathers Funding Challenges, Offers New Classes

Property tax values are leveling off after four years; organization has 12 new programs for adults, teens and children.

Like many entities that depend on property taxes, Southern Lakes Parks and Recreation (SLPR) has had some tough times. But after four years of decreasing property values, funding is recovering, said Director Vince Paris. "The last four years has been somewhat brutal," Paris said. "It's finally leveled off." Last year's property tax revenue was $381,000, he said, and this year, it's within a couple hundred dollars of that. SLPR’s budget has two areas, administration ($400,000) and recreation (approximately $660,000), he said. Staff and board members are working on the 2013 budget, which will be ready in about six weeks. SLPR’s budget is based on the calendar year. Fenton Farmers Market Delights Its Fans

Thursday evening activities include the market outside the Fenton Community & Cultural Center and Concerts in the Park, at the Fenton Gazebo.

Digging through a plastic pan filled with sand, toddlers Samantha Miller and Maren-Jean Miller searched for "dinosaurs." The activity, offered by the Rainbow Child Care Center at the Fenton Farmers Market, delighted the two first-time market-goers. The two were with father, Kevin Miller, who said the family ate, did a little shopping and then decided to have some fun finding toys in the sand. Lauren Peabody, also of Fenton, went to the market for the first time with her baby daughter, Amelia. "I love it," Peabody said. "It's my first time here, which is very silly because I live in Fenton. "I adore it," she added. "I think it's a great thing for a small town." The Fenton area mourned two drowning victims this week, an 11-year-old boy from Fenton who lost his life in Marl Lake and a 25-year-old man from Flat Rock who was visiting friends when he disappeared in Lake Fenton.
