Fenton Officials Approve $4.7 Million Cornerstone Project Agreement

The approved agreement would include $581,000 investment from the Fenton Downtown Development Authority.

Fenton's Cornerstone Project took another large step toward reality Thursday as the Fenton City Council and the Downtown Development Authority approved an agreement necessary to move forward with the project. For the last 18 months, the Fenton DDA and Corlin Builders have worked together to develop the Cornerstone Project and now have a final outline of an agreement and are ready to continue plans. "I think it is going to be a great project," Mayor Pro-Tem Cheryl King said. "I think you are going to see a lot more happening downtown as part of our vision." Corlin Builders will develop a four story, mixed-use building at a total cost of $4.7 million. The building will have restaurant and retail space on the first floor, along with one and …

New for Fenton Jinglefest — Fireworks Finale

Fireworks will blast off after 6 p.m. lighted Christmas parade on Saturday, over the Fenton Community & Cultural Center.

Saturday’s Fenton Jinglefest will be a real blast — literally — with a new fireworks finale. “We’re excited about the fireworks,” said Shelly, Day, Fenton Regional Chamber of Commerce president. The fireworks finale will be very short, at 8-10 minutes, but the chamber hopes to raise more money for future, bigger shows, Day said. The cost for this year’s eight-minute finale is $2,000. People can see them right after the Christmas parade, which begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 1. The fireworks will be visible over the Fenton Community & Cultural Center. In addition, many Jinglefest activities begin at a new time, 3 p.m. on Dec. 1, Day said. These include the return of horse-drawn wagon rides downtown, courtesy of Caretel Inns of Linden. And there will …

Nothing to do with the DDA nor are the fireworks meant to detract from the meaning of CHRISTmas. Rather it is meant to attract visitors to downtown Fenton. Sounds like you have an ax to grind with the DDA, save that for a DDA meeting. Try volunteering with the Jingle Fest committee and see the hard work and dedication these volunteers put into making this event happen for our community to enjoy.   more ›

Changes in Grant Program Mean 5-6 Month Delay for Fenton's Streetscape

The good news is, the DDA will receive funding, consultant says.

Changes by the U.S. Congress in federal Transportation Enhancement Program grant funding will mean a five- to six-month delay for the Fenton Downtown Development Authority’s Streetscape project. The amount of the grant, which the Michigan Department of Transportation is handling, is still is to be confirmed, but it will help the project significantly, says DDA Director Michael Burns. Timothy Juidici, an engineering consultant for Fenton from OHM, said U.S. Congress has reauthorized the grant program, which it has done annually since the fund expired five years ago. But in this year’s bill, Congress has combined the transportation funding with Safe Roads to School and a recreational trail fund. MDOT is learning how the program works, he …

Fenton Planning Commission Considering Rezoning, Site Plan for Old Fire Hall Restaurant

The planning commission is scheduled to consider a zoning change from Park and Cemetery, and review a proposed site plan for the new restaurant.

The Fenton Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss a proposed rezoning and site plan review for the restaurant going into the old fire hall on South Leroy Street, at the planning commission meeting next Thursday. The owners of the Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen, in Clarkston, have an agreement to move a new restaurant into the location. They hope to start construction inside the old fire hall building before the end of the year, said Fenton Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Chairman Craig Schmidt. The restaurant developers plan to use an outdoor deck when they open at the old Fenton Fire Hall in 2013, said Joseph Wright, of Landscape Architectural Services. After Fenton DDA's Streetscape project is completed, the restaurant plans to …

Fenton DDA Approves More Money for Cornerstone's Soil Test Borings

Ground breaking for $4 million Cornerstone Building could be in the spring, DDA director says.

To keep the estimated $4 million Cornerstone project moving, the Fenton Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has approved additional money for soil boring tests. It’s to determine whether the soil can handle the load capacity of the future Cornerstone building, at Leroy Street and Silver Lake Road, across from The State Bank. Ground breaking for the project could take place this spring, said DDA Director Michael Burns. The Fenton Planning Commission has approved the fact a four-story building could go on the site of the former Republic Bank. The preliminary soil analysis for the site took place earlier this year, and soil borings 35 feet below ground was examined, Burns said. This preliminary analysis showed the soil has a mix of clay, …

"Schmidt said the fourth floor is recessed, so when someone looks at it from the street, the building appears three stories tall. A 3D model will be available soon. Fenton’s planning commission, DDA and council have voiced overwhelming approval for a four-story Cornerstone building, he added. “I believe you will be pleased at the building once you see it up,” Schmidt said." Fenton DDA Selects Clarkston Union Owners for Old Fenton Fire Hall

Plan calls for outdoor seating, 60 beers on tap and and open fire pit in the kitchen.

The old Fenton Fire Hall will change hands, but will not likely change names. The Fenton DDA selected Clarkston Union owners Curt Catallo and Ann Stevenson to renovate the old Fenton Fire Hall Tuesday and Catallo said the  name will likely stick. "The Fenton Fire Hall name was decided when it was carved into the facade nearly 100 years ago," Catallo said. "You do not mess with that. It was decided when the first stone was laid." The Clarkston Union owners were selected over the other finalist Arbor Brewing Company owners Matt and Rene Greff. Fenton's DDA voted unanimously on Tuesday in favor of Clarkston Union. The DDA will provide Clarkston Union with a $100,000 financial incentive for leasehold improvements, said DDA Director Michael …

DDA Hopes to Fill Old Fenton Fire Hall Quickly

DDA Director Michael Burns said 5 to 10 microbreweries and restaurants have already expressed interest.

The Fenton Downtown Development Authority hopes to move fast on gaining a new tenant for the old Fenton fire hall. DDA Director Michael Burns said he hopes to have a business selected in the next 45 to 60 days and added he believes the city will have several options. He said city officials quickly received five to 10 phones calls from credible microbreweries and restaurants after the lease with Michigan Brewing Company was terminated Thursday. Burns wouldn’t reveal specifics on interested parties. He said the DDA would consider all proposals, but added the community has shown support for a microbrewery or restaurant and tavern. “We want to get it done fast,” Burns said. “I think we can do it.” Burns said he expects to have more proposals …

Business Owners, Residents, Offer Opinions on $4.5 Million Fenton Streetscape

City hosts two public meetings on Wednesday to gather the community's input on the 2013 project.

Business owners and residents weighed in on Fenton's approximately $4.5 million Downtown Streetscape and Road Rehabilitation project, slated for 2013, at two public meetings on Wednesday. The project will improve walkability and aesthetics, reconstruct streets, rehab deteriorating pavement in other roadways and help lower traffic speeds, said Kent Early, of OHM, the city's engineering consultant. Around 10 people attended the morning session, with about 25 at the evening meeting. Howard and Sonja Melrose, who live across from The French Laundry, said they see the numbers of people that The French Laundry brings to their neighborhood. They hope the improvements planned throughout downtown Fenton will help other businesses boom and prosper. …
