Fenton Council Approves Rezoning, Other Agreements for Fenton Fire Hall

Union Joints asked for space for extensions to restaurant, and easements for landscape maintenance and refuse operations.

Fenton City Council has approved a rezoning for the old fire hall property, where the Fenton Fire Hall restaurant will be moving in. Council adopted the planning commission’s recommendation, to change the zoning for 301 S. Leroy St. from Parks/Cemeteries to Central Business District/Planned Unit Development. The new zoning fits in with the rest of the downtown, said Assistant City Manager Michael Burns, also Downtown Development Authority (DDA) director. City council also quit claim deeded two parcels of city property near the old fire hall building that Union Joints needs to construct extensions for its restaurant. In addition, council approved 10-year easement agreements for a refuse station and maintenance of the landscaping east of the…

Fenton Ice Rink Debate Returns

The Fenton Planning Commission recommended a proposed ordinance last week, while homeowners association voted against ice rink.

With colder weather on the way, the Fenton Planning Commission is recommending an ordinance on ice rinks in residential areas to city council. John Jones, the property owner who built an ice rink in the Andover Woods subdivision in Fenton thanked the commissioners for acting quickly, saying the proposed ordinance is a framework that people can move forward with. The city placed a temporary ban on ice rinks in residential neighborhoods. If it doesn’t move forward, there will be a lot of unhappy little skaters, Jones added. He builds the rink because he sees its value for the children in the neighborhood, he said. Jones doesn’t live in Andover Woods but owns property there. Fenton resident Malissa Bossardet, who was instrumental in having …

What is this hurting? Is the sound of laughter and whoops of delight painful to your ears? I am floored that people, no doubt those who lament "young people today," their obesity and laziness, would oppose some good old fashioned fun for kids.   more ›

City Considering Preliminary Approval for Fenton Wellness Center

One-story, 100-bed skilled rehabilitation facility, by MediLodge, is planned off Pine Creek Drive.

Changes in the market occurred several years ago, and Pine Creek in Fenton wasn’t completed as a housing development. With changes in the Planned Unit Development (PUD) agreement for the site, it can be developed as the Fenton Wellness Center, a rehabilitation facility for the MediLodge group. The Fenton Planning Commission has granted its approval for the preliminary PUD amendments, and city council is the next step, said Zoning Administrator Brad Hissong. At the planning commission meeting on Thursday, architect Daniel DeRemer, of JW Design, presented plans for the Fenton Wellness Center, a 100-bed facility. It will be a one-story building with 80 percent private rooms and 20 percent semi-private ones, DeRemer said. What it won’t be is, …

Fenton Fire Hall Restaurant to Include Added Floor with Retractable Glass Roof

Owners plan to preserve historical building while renovating and celebrating it, Catallo says.

Plans for the Fenton Fire Hall restaurant include the addition of a third floor (on top of the current roof) with a retractable glass roof, long communal tables, its own bar — and a fire pit in the center, said Curt Catallo from Clarkston Union, one of the owners. At Thursday’s meeting, the planning commission held public hearings on a proposed rezoning and special land use for the restaurant, to be located in the old fire hall, and approved a site plan review for it. The proposed rezoning and special land use, which is for outdoor seating, will go to city council for its approval. The rezoning would be from Parks & Cemeteries to Central Business District/Planned Unit Development, like the rest of the downtown, said Fenton planning …

The additional investment is recognized and appreciated but this design aesthetic is absolutely awful. Please look to the Fenton Community Center for guidance on how to add on to a historic building but maintain aesthetic and architectural integrity. This design adds no value to "Historic Dibbleville". I'm afraid a geodesic dome over the gazebo will be next.   more ›

Fenton Planning Commission Considering Rezoning, Site Plan for Old Fire Hall Restaurant

The planning commission is scheduled to consider a zoning change from Park and Cemetery, and review a proposed site plan for the new restaurant.

The Fenton Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss a proposed rezoning and site plan review for the restaurant going into the old fire hall on South Leroy Street, at the planning commission meeting next Thursday. The owners of the Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen, in Clarkston, have an agreement to move a new restaurant into the location. They hope to start construction inside the old fire hall building before the end of the year, said Fenton Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Chairman Craig Schmidt. The restaurant developers plan to use an outdoor deck when they open at the old Fenton Fire Hall in 2013, said Joseph Wright, of Landscape Architectural Services. After Fenton DDA's Streetscape project is completed, the restaurant plans to …

$10 Million Nursing Home Facility Could Locate in Fenton

A 100-bed nursing home would be on 30 acres of stalled Pine Creek North housing development; future growth of MediLodge facility there possible.

MediLodge has submitted proposal for a "next generation" $10 million-plus senior citizens' skilled nursing and rehabilitative services facility, in a vacant area of a Fenton subdivision. It would be almost a high-end hotel, with extensive physical therapy space, a health spa, food program and JavaLodge for visitors, said Daniel DeRemer, an architect for JW Design Architectural Studio in Royal Oak. Although it would be open 24/7 to visitors, visits to MediLodge residents are usually during business hours, he said. The facility would add 80 to 100 jobs, and construction would begin around fall 2013. DeRemer and a representative for Pine Creek North sought feedback from city council at Monday's work session. The proposed development would be …

It's not about walking a dog on a builder's empty lot, it's about not having 80-100 employees, plus visitors, patients, and ambulances driving down our residential street every day. It's about proper zoning and the city following their own ordinances so that we don't have outpatient medical facilities in the middle of a residential subdivision. I fully support putting construction workers back to…   more ›

Fenton Councilman Asks for Answer to Chicken Question

Les Bland is encouraging residents to come to Monday's council meeting and weigh in with their thoughts on the issue.

After seven months, it's time for Fenton to make a decision on whether to allow chicken keeping in the city, Councilman Les Bland said at Monday's worksession. "It's making us look like idiots," Bland said. "I get comments on it every day. ... We need to give them an answer." The issue went to the Fenton Planning Commission, which decided to let it die without tabling it or voting on it, said Councilman Ben Smith. Smith represents the council on the planning commission. Smith said he'll vote against an ordinance allowing chicken keeping, whether it allows one chicken or 20. "My feeling is, chickens don't belong in a city," he said. Since the planning commission didn't look at the issue and do their jobs, it's up to council, Bland said. …

Fenton Neighbors Face Off Over Ice Rink

Dispute over ice structure could result in city ordinance.

It's a face-off that has left the skating rink and neighborhood and has landed in city hall. Fenton resident John Jones has built a backyard ice rink behind his home in the Andover Woods subdivision for about six years. Recently, however, a neighbor filed a complaint with the Homeowner's Association and the dispute has city of Fenton officials drafting an ordinance on backyard skating rinks. "I was very disappointed to find one disgruntled homeowner wants to take away the one thing I love doing for the community," Jones said. "We are just making memories for these kids and it keeps them out of trouble and doing something positive." Neighbor Bob Campbell says the ice rink is not aesthetically pleasing and lowers property values, according …
