Lake Fenton superintendent Wayne Wright said schools have been implementing a modified lockdown. Police have been monitoring both Fenton and Lake Fenton Schools.
Fenton and Lake Fenton Schools have taken extra security measures since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Lake Fenton superintendent Wayne Wright said schools have been implementing a modified lockdown. He said classrooms doors are usually equipped with a magnet that prevents them from latching, however, those magnets have been removed and the doors have been locked. Wright said West Shore Elementary school's main doors have been locked and people have been entering through a buzzer system. “We have had heightened security. We are keeping a close watch on everything that is going on,” Wright said. He added that officers from Genesee County Sheriff’s Department have been around the building much more since the …

Three Fenton teachers dedicate time to students and their country and are supported by many this Veterans Day.
Some Fenton teachers who are helping children learn about reading, math and science are also leading by example when it comes to honor, freedom and bravery. In addition to helping shape the minds of our youth, three Fenton teachers have also served our country and fought for our freedom. As many will celebrate Veterans Day Sunday, it is a time for solemn reflection to remember those who served our country honorably and fought for our collective ideals. It is also an opportunity for many to support military personnel who are currently active in the reserves, at domestic military bases and at overseas posts. Todd Mills has always liked the aspect of serving his country. The 7th and 8th grade science teacher at Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School…

The 2006 Fenton graduate is top vote getter among three candidates.
There will be a new face on the Fenton Board of Education soon. Drew Shapiro beat out competitors Dior Rushton and incumbent Sandra Mathews Barnes in the Fenton school board race. Shapiro will join president Lynn Hopper, vice president Nora Kryza, treasurer Richard Des Jardins and trustees Daniel Carter Brian Horton and Tamara Valley for a four-year term. "Drew will bring a young voice," Hopper said. "He's going to have a learning curve like …

Tigers prepare to take on Walled Lake Western in the district finals Friday in the Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs.
While explaining his relationship with Trent Grimes, Fenton Tigers football coach Jeff Setzke paused momentarily and said “it gets a little more bizarre than that.” Sure, coaches have close, even family-like, ties with their players and staff members -- but in the case of Setzke and Grimes, Fenton’s 6-foot-1, 195-pound running back, the term “family” most definitely applies. And so does the term “bizarre,” to an extent. Setzke essentially ran down a branch of his family tree while further explaining just how close he and Grimes were. “My mother and his grandfather graduated two years apart at Midland High,” Setzke said. “And 20 years later, I ended up in Montrose (to play football for Bob Hayes, Grimes’ grandfather), and 20 years after …

School provides 700 meals a day to Fenton elementary students.
It’s often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Fenton school leaders have taken that information to heart by implementing a program at Fenton’s elementary schools that give all students the opportunity to feed their stomach and fuel their brain. "Hungry kids don’t learn," explained Jaymi Whalen, food service director for Fenton Area Public Schools, because they are thinking about their hunger and when it is time for lunch to roll around. “We wanted them to start off the day with a good meal,” she said. With a strong belief that good nutrition supports learning, a free breakfast program kicked off in the elementary schools in March 2011.The response has been amazing, said Whalen. Before 2011 when children who didn’t …
