Changes in Grant Program Mean 5-6 Month Delay for Fenton's Streetscape

The good news is, the DDA will receive funding, consultant says.

Changes by the U.S. Congress in federal Transportation Enhancement Program grant funding will mean a five- to six-month delay for the Fenton Downtown Development Authority’s Streetscape project. The amount of the grant, which the Michigan Department of Transportation is handling, is still is to be confirmed, but it will help the project significantly, says DDA Director Michael Burns. Timothy Juidici, an engineering consultant for Fenton from OHM, said U.S. Congress has reauthorized the grant program, which it has done annually since the fund expired five years ago. But in this year’s bill, Congress has combined the transportation funding with Safe Roads to School and a recreational trail fund. MDOT is learning how the program works, he …

Officials Look to Add Parking in Downtown Fenton

Fenton DDA plans to expand parking lot at 106 Shiawassee Street and at the former Fenton square.

It might be a little easier to find a parking spot in Fenton this winter. The Fenton Downtown Development Authority had planned to expand the A.J. Phillips Fenton Museum parking lot behind 106 Shiawassee Street, but budget restraints previously prevented them from completing the project. However, after awarding the Clarkston Union $100,000 for the old Fenton Fire Hall Project, instead of the original $400,000 slated for renovation aid, the funds may be available for crews to move ahead with the project. Officials hope to install the lots this fall, so there will be additional parking for the opening of the Fenton Fire Hall and the Downtown Streetscape Project. They also plan to put parking spots at the former Fenton Square, the grassy area…

Fenton DDA Approves $50,000 Streetscape Public Relations Plan

Budget reduced from $126,000 after receiving criticism earlier this year.

An estimated $126,000 public relations campaign for Fenton’s $4.5 million Streetscape project seemed a little much to many local residents and city officials. So the Fenton Downtown Development Authority trimmed that number not to exceed $50,000 and approved the plan at Tuesday's meeting. The new budget calls for $30,400 for New Moon Vision's services and $19,500 for media buys. New Moon Visions, of Milford, the city’s marketing consultant, will be paid to assist with communication and events surrounding the Streetscape project, creating a consistent streetscape theme, through Fentonbecloser.com, social media and designing signs -- separate from standard constrution signs -- to help businesses get customers in the door. New Moon Visions …

Seriously? Seriously!! Do not spend any more money on "Be Closer". It has quietly slipped out of everyone's train of conscious thought, why dredge it back up and make Fenton a laughing stock again?   more ›

Fenton Streetscape Project Set to Begin in April

Officials give presentation to Fenton Downtown Development Authority.

Downtown Fenton is a little closer to getting its makeover. Officials from OHM, the city's engineering firm and Landscape Architecture Services gave a presentation on the updated plans for an estimated $4.54 million in streetscape and road improvements, planned to begin in spring 2013, from Elizabeth to Sixth Streets in Fenton. Road pavement rehabilitation and reconstruction make up an estimated $3.69 million of the work, with a projected $838,000 for the streetscape. Improvements will target Leroy Street and a number of other areas. The base mapping is done from Silver Lake Road to Second Street, officials said. However, officials are still working on plans for other areas. One issue being addressed is changing the "confusing" north …

Business Owners Raise Concerns Over Fenton's Makeover

DDA member says the facade program is moving too slow.

Downtown Fenton is set to see some major changes with the $4.5 streetscrape project and a facade program to update local businesses. However, not everyone is happy with the plan and the pace. Fenton Downtown Development Authority member Chris Bayer, who co-owns A Joyful Noise Music Studio, would like to see the DDA' facade upgrade program speed up or be eliminated, according to the Flint Journal. "If it was successful, money would be expended, and buildings would be fixed and we'd be further along than what we are," Bayer said in Wednesday's article. "What we really need to do is accept the reality that it's not working and we need to modify it. Any amount of time that we take trying to fix what's already been undone, is a mistake." …

My understanding is the city owns that property which is why the florist moved. There were several meetings on it, and I know the florist was pretty upset about it. It's a shame b/c she was a very nice person. It's also my understanding that the city is interested in purchasing the grainery, across from the Fenton Hotel. But when Ken Labelle was employed by the city, he upset the owner so much I …   more ›

$126,000 Public Relations Plan for Fenton Streetscape to be Trimmed

Council asks Downtown Development Authority to cut some of the expenses.

An estimated $126,000 public relations campaign for Fenton’s $4.5 million Streetscape project is headed back to the drawing board for some cuts, after criticisms on the cost by residents and city council members. The Fenton Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is funding the Streetscape project, which is planned for the 2013 construction season. The DDA’s plans need city council’s approval and it looks as if changes will have to be made for that to happen. New Moon Visions, of Milford, the city’s marketing and public relations consultant, will be paid to assist with communication, meetings and events surrounding the Streetscape project. It includes communicating to people living in and outside of Fenton, how to reach downtown businesses …

Business Owners, Residents, Offer Opinions on $4.5 Million Fenton Streetscape

City hosts two public meetings on Wednesday to gather the community's input on the 2013 project.

Business owners and residents weighed in on Fenton's approximately $4.5 million Downtown Streetscape and Road Rehabilitation project, slated for 2013, at two public meetings on Wednesday. The project will improve walkability and aesthetics, reconstruct streets, rehab deteriorating pavement in other roadways and help lower traffic speeds, said Kent Early, of OHM, the city's engineering consultant. Around 10 people attended the morning session, with about 25 at the evening meeting. Howard and Sonja Melrose, who live across from The French Laundry, said they see the numbers of people that The French Laundry brings to their neighborhood. They hope the improvements planned throughout downtown Fenton will help other businesses boom and prosper. …

Fenton Hosting Streetscape Project Information Sessions

Event to be held Jan. 18.

Changes are on the way to Downtown Fenton. Beginning in 2013, a large-scale streetscape project will update the look of the downtown district with new sidewalks, curbing and design features. The city of Fenton and the Fenton DDA invite local residents, businesses and patrons of Downtown Fenton to attend informational sessions on January 18 to learn all about it. “This streetscape project is going to bring many wonderful long term benefits to our downtown,” said Fenton DDA chairman Craig Schmidt. “In the short term, however, construction always presents a challenge for merchants and visitors. The better prepared we are all, the easier it will be.” Two informational sessions will be held on January 18, 2012 at Fenton City Hall at 8:30 a.m. …
