Fenton Township Shooting Trial Scheduled for May

The Fenton Township shooting case is scheduled for a jury trial in May. The case has been delayed on several occasions as evidence was gathered and charges were debated. The charges include armed robbery, home invasion first degree and felony firearms, according to court records. Robert Johnson testified on May 16, 2012 that Collins broke into his home, robbed him and shot him April 14, 2012 in Fenton Township. Johnson said he and Collins, 23, of Flint, exchanged gunfire that day on the 13000 block of Linden Road in the preliminary exam. “I was trying to kill him because he was in my house trying to kill me,” Johnson told the court in May. “It was my life or his life.” According to court records, the case is scheduled for a pre-trial on …

Fenton Township Shooting Case Sent Back to District Court

More charges could be added against David Eddie Collins; evidence from scene is missing, assistant prosecutor says.

Two more charges could be added in the spring shooting incident that occurred on Linden Road in Fenton Township. During today's pretrial hearing in 7th Circuit Court, Judge Joseph Farah agreed to the prosecutor's request to send the case against David Eddie Collins, 23, of Flint, back to District Court. Prosecutor David Leyton's office is asking for additional charges of cruelty to animals and assault with intent to rob while armed. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Karen Hanson asked for the additional charges after talking to the shooting victim and defense counsel. Regarding the possible charge of assault with intent to rob while armed, Hanson said the victim (Robert Johnson) was shot, and there are medical records. Johnson also had a dog …

Pre-Trial and Trial in Fenton Township Shooting Moved to Oct. 2 and 5

Today's pre-trial hearing for the Fenton Township shooting case has been adjourned to Oct. 2 and Oct. 5, along with the trial. It is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. both days, at the Genesee County Courthouse. David Eddie Collins, 23, of Flint, has been charged with armed robbery, home invasion and felony firearms after police say he was involved in a shooting at a Fenton Township home on April 14. The pre-trial hearing was scheduled for today, in Judge Joseph Farah's court room, after being moved from June 16. Judge Mark McCabe bound the case to 7th Circuit Court on May 16, when Robert Johnson testified Collins entered his home, demanded money and shot him in the hip. The alleged incident occurred in the 13000 block of Linden Road.

David Eddie Collins sat in an orange jumpsuit and chains shaking his head Wednesday as Robert Johnson testified that Collins broke into his home, robbed him and shot him April 14 in Fenton Township. Johnson said he and Collins, 23, of Flint, exchanged gunfire that day on the 13000 block of Linden Road in the preliminary exam in front of Judge Mark McCabe in 67th District Court in Flint. “I was trying to kill him because he was in my house trying to kill me,” Johnson told the court. “It was my life or his life.” McCabe bound the case over to circuit court after hearing Johnson’s testimony. Police Charge Man in Fenton Township Shooting

David Eddie Collins faces life in prison on armed robbery, home invasion charges.

Police have charged a 23-year-old Flint man for his suspected involvement with a shooting at a Fenton Township home on April 14. Genesee County Sheriff’s Capt. Terence Green said police arrested David Eddie Collins on April 30 during another incident at a Flint home. Green said Collins became a suspect after it was discovered he received medical treatment at Hurley Hospital for a gunshot to the hand on April 17.   He said the victim, Robert Johnson, and the suspects exchanged gunfire on April 14, when the suspects broke into the home looking for money.   Randy Johnson said his son posted a picture of $5,000 in a box on Facebook and when the men entered the home, they asked him where the money was. Sheriff's Department Returns to Fenton Township Shooting Scene

It appeared police were collecting more evidence from the scene.

Several Genesee County Sheriff's Department cars were parked on the scene of Saturday's Fenton Township shooting on Tuesday. Police said there was nothing new in the investigation and declined to comment further. It appeared officers were collecting evidence from the scene. One officer was looking closely at the front door of the home, which still had blood showing Sunday morning after what police believe may have been a shootout Saturday night at the home on the 13000 block of Linden Road. There were police dogs on scene. There was also a bag of what appeared to be clothing sitting near a police car. Police arrived around 12:30 p.m. and stayed on the scene for several hours. Violence Rare in Fenton Area

Many residents shocked to hear about shooting, robbery in Fenton Township.

Despite the recent Fenton Township shooting, violent crimes remain low in Fenton, according to reports, and many local residents said they feel safe living in the area, but do have concerns. Fenton had 15 violent crimes in 2010, according to FBI statistics, while Linden had one. Numbers for 2011 have not yet been released. Here is the rundown of 2010 crimes in Fenton: "Violence is rare in the area. We are 100 percent positive this (the Fenton Township Shooting) was not random. They were targeted," said Genesee County Sheriff's Department Capt. Terence Green. There were 29 violent crimes in Fenton in 2009 including two rapes, eight robberies and 19 aggravated assaults. Fenton Township Shooting Suspects May Have Been Shot

Genesee County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Terence Green said at least six bullets were fired from two different guns.

Police are looking into new leads and checking area hospitals for gunshot victims as the Fenton Township shooting and robbery investigation continues. Genesee County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Terence Green said officers were following up on new leads that had just come in Monday evening. “We are 100 percent certain this was not random. They were going for the victim,” Green said.
