Old Newsboys Collecting Donations in Fenton for Christmas Box Program

They will be near Silver Lake Road/Silver Parkway and Shiawassee Avenue/Leroy Street Friday.

The Old Newsboys will be collecting donations in Fenton on Friday, at the intersections of Leroy Street and West Shiawassee Avenue and Silver Lake Road at Silver Parkway. Proceeds will buy toys and other Christmas gifts for underprivileged children, said Fenton Chief of Police Rick Aro, who is a volunteer for the Old Newsboys. Volunteers will collect donations in exchange for papers. The Old Newsboys provided Christmas gifts to 5,486 children in 2011, their website said. Executive Director Chris Hamilton said they are on pace to help approximately the same number this year. Old Newsboys of Flint has a goal of raising $400,000 this year for its programs. Fenton Council Approves Rezoning, Other Agreements for Fenton Fire Hall

Union Joints asked for space for extensions to restaurant, and easements for landscape maintenance and refuse operations.

Fenton City Council has approved a rezoning for the old fire hall property, where the Fenton Fire Hall restaurant will be moving in. Council adopted the planning commission’s recommendation, to change the zoning for 301 S. Leroy St. from Parks/Cemeteries to Central Business District/Planned Unit Development. The new zoning fits in with the rest of the downtown, said Assistant City Manager Michael Burns, also Downtown Development Authority (DDA) director. City council also quit claim deeded two parcels of city property near the old fire hall building that Union Joints needs to construct extensions for its restaurant. Fenton Village Players to Present 'A Visit to the North Pole'

There’s still time to see the Fenton Village Players’ original “A Visit to the North Pole.” The community is invited to come and join in the fun as the Bakery Elves get ready for Christmas. “There will be singing, dancing, and plenty of fun in this North Pole talent show,” the Fenton Village Players say on their website. “After the one-hour show, children will be invited to the Winter Wonderland, where we will play games and share Christmas cookies. Fenton Area Women Help Children at Whaley Center

A group of friends selects a charity each year to help at Christmastime.

A group of approximately 50 Fenton area friends are helping make Christmas brighter for kids at Whaley Children’s Center in Flint this year. They fulfilled the wish lists of a 10-year-old girl, Destiny, and an 11-year-old boy, Brenden, and purchased more items to help others at the children’s center, said Betty Saule, of Fenton. The friends purchased and wrapped CD players, shoes, boots, slippers, robes, whole outfits, coats, personal care items and gifts featuring the ever-popular singer Justin Bieber. Saule said they enjoyed helping the children. “It really has been wonderful,” she said. Fenton Police Still Searching for Armed Robbery Suspect

Man stole two bottles of pain medication from Walgreen's on Silver Lake Road on Friday night, police say.

Two bottles of pain medication were stolen during an armed robbery of the Walgreen’s pharmacy in Fenton on Friday, said Chief of Police Rick Aro. During the theft, the man produced a black semi-automatic handgun but didn’t make any overt threats other than having the weapon in his hand, police said. The man entered the Walgreen’s store at 8 p.m. Friday and handed the pharmacy clerk a note announcing the robbery, Aro said. At one point, the man spoke and asked for pain medication. After obtaining the medication, he ran from the store and fled to the north. Police are looking for a white male in his mid-20s, 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall. The man was wearing a green hoodie with the number 22 on the back, sunglasses and tan pants…

Fenton City Council: Streetscape Project Will Be in 2014

Change in federal grant program delays project; council and DDA members believe splitting project over 2013 and 2014 would harm businesses.

It’s official — Fenton’s Streetscape project will begin in early spring 2014. City council approved the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) recommendation, to have the construction take place over one season instead of two, and to wait until 2014 to try to secure up to $1.5 million in grant funding. DDA Director Michael Burns, also assistant city manager, said the DDA has been working on Streetscape since 2010. It intended the project to begin this spring and for construction to take place in 2013, but the federal government changed how a grant program Fenton applied for is set up. Fenton has support for up to $500,000 through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) through this grant program, which it applied for in April, Burns…

Fenton Police Searching for Robbery Suspect Who Carried Handgun

Man with black semi-automatic robs Walgreen's on Silver Lake Road in Fenton on Friday, police say.

Fenton police are searching for a white male in connection with a robbery at Walgreen's Pharmacy, 3270 Silver Lake Road, at 8 p.m. Friday. Police are looking for a man who carried a black semi-auto handgun, the police report said. The suspect appears to be right handed, and he appeared to have several layers of clothes on, as if he works outside, according to the Fenton Police Department. If anyone recognizes the suspect, or the distinct green hooded sweatshirt with the number 22 on the back, Fenton police ask that they please contact Det. Ron Skarzynski (810) 577-5783 or Det. Scott Townsend (810) 397-2982. The green sweatshirt also has some white writing on the upper left chest area, the police report said.

Fenton Kiwanis Collecting Donations for Christmas Food Baskets Friday

Program helps families in need for the holidays.

Fenton Kiwanis is asking for donations today for its Christmas food basket fundraiser. They are collecting cash donations from drivers at the intersections of Adelaide and North Road, and Adelaide and High Street, from 1 to 5 p.m. The Fenton Kiwanians will wear Santa hats and suits and provide a Kiwanis flyer to all cash donors.

Fenton Police Department Asking for New Tahoe and Emergency Gear

Officers are two vehicles short due to budget issues; department will request 2 vehicles in 2013, chief says.

Two cars short due to city budget issues, the Fenton Police Department is asking council to approve $25,747 for a Chevrolet Tahoe. The two-wheel drive vehicle needs $7,497 in emergency equipment as well, such as overhead lights, cage to separate the front from the back seats, front push bar and lettering, said Chief of Police Rick Aro. The police department went two years without a vehicle purchase, and Aro was hoping for two last year. But Fenton was able to purchase one last year, he said. Now the police are in need of two vehicles but are asking for one. He will request two in the next budget year, Aro added. Compared with other types of vehicles, such as Caprices and Impalas, he believes the Tahoe is “more car for the money,” Aro said…
