Area school districts have taken steps to combat bullying, but some parents say it hasn't been effective.
Linden parents believe bullying is still happening regularly at Linden High School. Several parents spoke on the issue on Wednesday's school board meeting, Mlive Media reported, claiming incidents have been reported without much action. The article stated that School Board President Scott Maker said the district is looking more into the issue. After the suicide death of Josh Pacheco in November, a junior at Linden High School, Fenton Patch reported that superintendents were discussing how their schools handle bullying. Linden Community Schools added anti-bullying hot lines students can call or text. Lake Fenton Middle School posted the best MEAP scores in Genesee County.
After posting the top MEAP scores in Geneseee County for the third straight year, Lake Fenton Middle School Principal Dan Ferguson posed a question to his students. "Where do we want to go from here?" Ferguson asked in an assembly Wednesday morning. Ferguson said he would like to set goals even higher for the school. He said officials will work with the Genesee Intermediate School District to look for any gaps in their curriculum and try to do a better job of preparing students for the challenges. Students post top scores in Genesee County.
Here is a brief look at the MEAP results for Lake Fenton Community Schools. Lake Fenton posted the best scores in Genesee County for reading, writing and social studies. They had the second highest science scores and the third highest math scores. The sixth and seventh grade students placed first in the county for highest composite scores. The eighth-graders posted the fourth highest composite scores in the school. If you combine the grade levels or the composite scores, the students had the highest ranking scores in the county. Fenton offcials say back roads are too dangerous for buses.
Fenton and Lake Fenton schools closed Monday because of weather and road conditions. It's the fourth snow day for each school this year. Fenton Area Public Schools posted on its Facebook Page that "all of the district dirt roads that our buses travel on are covered with ice and too dangerous to drive." All Fenton Area Public Schools evening events scheduled for 2 p.m. or later will take place as scheduled today. The National Weather Service is calling for scattered rain showers before 9 a.m., then snow showers after. The temperature is expected to drop to 32 by 5 p.m. Winds will increase in the afternoon to 25 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 46.
MEAP results will be posted on Fenton Patch at 10 a.m.

The head of the Michigan Department of Education asserts that higher wages would encourage more people to become teachers.
The key to getting more qualified math and science teachers into Michigan schools is simple, according to state Superintendent Mike Flanagan: pay them more. Flanagan, who heads up the Michigan Department of Education, said Monday at an assembly of scientists at Michigan State University that Michigan schools need more math and science teachers. The problem, he said, is that most scientists and mathamaticians don't consider teaching in public schools to be a viable career option. “We can do all we want with content standards, but the elephant in the room is that it won’t do much good if we don’t have enough math and science teachers in our schools,” Flanagan said while discussing science standards in K-12 shools, according to a release from…

Temperatures are expected to rise to 58 degrees today.
Weather conditions once again forced area officials to cancel school for Lake Fenton and Fenton Tuesday. Fenton Area Public Schools posted that icy road conditions were the cause. All sporting events will go on as scheduled, accoring to Fenton Athletic Director Mike Bakker. Both schools also cancelled class on Monday. Temperatures are expected to climb to 58 today, with continuing rain. Showers and thunderstorms are expected tonight, with a chance of heavy rain. Rain is also expected Wednesday and Wednesday night before turning to snow. There were several car accidents listed on the Genesee County 911 Consortium Tuesday morning. Three students advanced to the district level.
Forty-five Lake Fenton High School Advanced Placement English Language and Composition students wrote speeches that were recorded and sent to the Fenton VFW post #3243 as entries in the annual Voice of Democracy Speech Scholarship contest. This year’s theme was “Is our Constitution still relevant?” Three students, Nicholas Forbush, Dominic Melton and Eljesa Vitija, advanced to the district level. They were recognized at a banquet at the Clio, Michigan VFW post on Jan. 13 Approximately 20-25 Genesee County high school students placed at this level. Vitija received a certificate of award for her entry. Melton received a fifth place award certificate and $50 scholarship. Forbush received a secondplace award certificate and $200 scholarship.

Group raised $1,700 to help Fenton teen with cancer, anti-bullying group continues to grow.
In the wake of some difficult times, Lake Fenton students have been making big efforts lately to make a difference in the community. In November, Linden High School student and Fenton resident Josh Pacheco, committed suicide and his parents believed bullying played a role in his death. In December, Lake Fenton freshman Joshua Polehna, 15, died after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Lake Fenton students have rallied to try to make their school and the surrounding communities a better place and help those in need. The Key Club, a Kiwanis-sponsored organization that helps out the community, raised $1,700 that was donated to the Katie Wyatt Foundation to help a Fenton teen suffering from cancer. School officials are monitoring absences because of sickness.
A Lake Fenton freshman died Saturday after being hospitalized because of flu-like symptoms last week, according to Lake Fenton superintendent Wayne Wright. Joshua Polehna, 15, first became sick during Christmas vacation. He was a member of the Lake Fenton Marching Band. Wright said school officials met with clergy members and representatives of Young Life, A non-denominational Christian ministry that reaches out to adolescents, Sunday evening. He said counseling is available this week for students who need it. He said a letter was sent to parents and posted on the school district’s website today explaining the situation and other information. (The letter is also attached to this article.)
