Larry Vollmar earned the art of crafting lace from his mother and sold his work at the Fenton Farmers Market.
Larry Vollmar may look like he should be out hunting or doing some wood work for his family, but instead you will find him spending his free time sewing or tatting. At age 73, Vollmar’s large hands are nimble as they loop and knot and stitch their way with fine thread and a tiny shuttle. What he creates is a fine lace for trimming a ladies handkerchief, a doily or even delicate earrings in all the colors of the rainbow. Vollmar grew up in Fairgrove farming with his father where he learned to be resourceful. His grandmother taught his to sew and his mother tutored him in the art of tatting, a technique used for crafting lace with a series of knots and loops. “It gave me something to do in the winter time,” he said. “And it kept my hands …

'Who's Your Best Friend' is for preschool through fourth- to fifth-grade; tells about God as as the ultimate and forever Best Friend.
Ilene Stephanie (Prodanas) Lasco, of Fenton, wasn’t thinking about becoming a children’s book author. But, with three new grandchildren this year, she found she had a message to share, Lasco said. “Who’s Your Best Friend,” which will be available mid-month, is the result. It’s a Christian message about the ultimate and forever Best Friend — God, she said. The book is geared for preschool through lower elementary grades (fourth to fifth). “Hopefully it will be a resource for home-schooled families, Christian churches, Sunday school programs, Bible and Christian schools, Christian summer camps and Christian bookstores,” Lasco said. “It follows the path of friends in your life.” The cover of the book is an illustration by Mike Woodcock, of …

Marcy Watters opened Ms. Ali's Gluten Free Treats in Twelve Oaks Mall after spending years baking goods for her daughter.
When Marcy Watters found out that her 2-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with Celiac disease, she had to make some major changes to her grocery list. Ali could no longer have gluten, a protein found in many foods processed from wheat and other grains. When Watters, of Fenton, couldn't find what she needed in stores, she began baking her own gluten-free goods for her daughter at home. Now more than a decade later, Watters and her daughter still find it difficult to find gluten-free offerings everywhere they go. "Gluten-free has come a long way in the last 12 years, but it's not where we could walk through the mall and she could get a pretzel or a cookie or something like everybody else," Watters said. Until now. Two weeks ago, Watters …

After the ceremony, newlyweds focus on merging of two lives, households and furnishings.
Often the first disagreement between newlyweds isn’t about money, household chores or even the in-laws. Instead, the issues that pop up are more likely to involve the “small stuff” - things like whether the toilet paper roll faces over or under; if that loved, well-worn recliner is going to be part of the living room décor; or whether their first furniture purchase together will be the bedroom ensemble she adores or the large, flat-screen television he can’t live without. As longtime couples know, compromise is a big part of marriage. Newlyweds setting up their first home together also quickly come to that conclusion, having to adjust to each other’s living habits and home décor styles. For Carol Campbell, it was also about getting used to…
