State map shows dates and locations of major MDOT road and bridge projects.

Planning your summer roadtrips, or just want to know when you should take a different route to work? A state highway construction map for 2013 is now available from the Michigan Department of Transportation that shows drivers where and when road and bridge projects are occurring across the state. The free annual map - called "Paving the Way" - is available at all MDOT Transportation Service Centers, regional offices, Welcome Centers and most state rest areas. "MDOT publishes this map to prepare Michigan motorists for the construction season ahead," State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle said in a press release. "It's a good time to also remind everyone to slow down and pay attention when driving through work zones on major state …

North Leroy Street in Fenton Opens to Traffic Sunday

The $1.5 million project is 95 percent complete, DPW director says.

Rain on Friday meant the paving on North Leroy Street finished Sunday, leaving the approximately $1.5 million project 95 percent complete, Fenton Department of Public Works Director Daniel Czarnecki said Monday. Adding traffic lane lines and new signs, and doing restoration work and cleaning need to be done, he said. A final inspection will take place before the last payments are made. The city contributed $280,000 of the funding, with $1.12 million coming through federal transportation funds. Including engineering costs, the project cost over $1.5 million. Next year’s Streetscape Project will make the North Leroy one look rather small, Czarnecki added. The North Leroy project began May 14, and the road was open Sunday, said Councilman Les…

All Lanes of Fenton's Leroy Street Scheduled to Open Next Friday

Road will be much improved after the construction, council members say.

All lanes of North Leroy Street are scheduled to be open to traffic on Sept. 21, as Fenton's approximately $1.32 million improvement project winds to an end. "Hang on and you'll have a speed trap out there again," said Councilman Les Bland at Monday's meeting. Construction began May 14, and it will have taken less than four months to complete it, Bland said. That's a very good time period for a project of its size, he added, and North Leroy Street will be ten times better than it ever was when the work is completed. It will be a very good road, Mayor Sue Osborn agreed. In the meantime, all of the businesses on North Leroy street are accessible to customers. "You have to have patience and be courteous," said Mayor Pro Tem Cheryl King. "Let'…

Michigan Department of Transportation Halts Most Construction Until Tuesday

Purpose is to make travel easier for 1.2 million motorists, officials say.

It's good news for Labor Day weekend travelers -- beginning at 3 p.m. today and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday, MDOT will suspend construction wherever possible on state roads and bridges. This will make travel easier for the 1.2 million motorists that AAA Michigan estimates will travel at least 50 miles away from home during the popular end-of-the-summer holiday, MDOT has reported on its website. To help make this holiday weekend a safe and enjoyable one, motorists are advised to minimize distractions while driving, obey the posted speed limits, and pay close attention to road signs and orange barrels as they navigate construction zones. "We urge all motorists to drive with caution through work zones during this busy summer holiday …

Fenton's North LeRoy Street Project to Begin Soon

It's expected to finish by the end of August; access to businesses and a lane in each direction will stay open.

With warmer weather, comes road construction season. And Fenton area motorists can expect to see construction signs and orange barrels soon on North LeRoy Street. Still, a lane in each direction and access to businesses will remain open throughout the project, said Department of Public Works Director Daniel Czarnecki. Construction on the city of Fenton's North LeRoy Street project is expected to start early next month and wrap up for the most part by the last Friday in August, before school begins, Czarnecki said. The city is opening bids from contractors on Friday, with the total project estimated at around $1.32 million. In addition to construction, expenses include engineering and materials testing. Fenton's engineering consultants for …
