The holidays are over, but the need for donations to local charities continues.
Around Christmas St. John's outreach ministry helped more than 200 families through its adopt-a-family program, but the need doesn't end after the holidays. According to the American Community Survey conducted by the US Census Bureau (2005 through 2009), 6.3 percent of families in Fenton live below the poverty level. Over a quarter of these families have children under age five. "On average, we receive about eight to ten requests each day," said Maureen Ottney, the outreach coordinator for social ministry at St. John the Evangelist. "We try to help with any basic needs people might have, whether it's clothing, shoes, coats, furniture, baby items or finding money to pay for water, gas, rent, prescriptions or other bills they can't pay …
