Area school districts have taken steps to combat bullying, but some parents say it hasn't been effective.
Linden parents believe bullying is still happening regularly at Linden High School. Several parents spoke on the issue on Wednesday's school board meeting, Mlive Media reported, claiming incidents have been reported without much action. The article stated that School Board President Scott Maker said the district is looking more into the issue. After the suicide death of Josh Pacheco in November, a junior at Linden High School, Fenton Patch reported that superintendents were discussing how their schools handle bullying. Lake Fenton High School's Starfish Initiative holds its first public event.
A large group of walkers from the Fenton area and beyond braved cold temperatures Sunday to join Lake Fenton High School’s anti-bullying organization, The Starfish Initiative, in honoring the memory of Josh Pacheco, a bullying victim who committed suicide. The walkers started out at Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School, in the Fenton Area Public Schools district and hiked to Bush Park. Pacheco was 17 and a junior at Linden High School. He committed suicide on Nov. 27. His parents said bullying played a role in his death and said Pacheco was gay, which led to him being bullied both inside and outside of school, according to the Flint Journal. Former Fenton resident Gabe Ford has been working on her pitching arm. She doesn't plan on abandoning speaking out against bullying to make a run at the majors, but she is scheduled to throw out the first pitch at the Washington Nationals game on Friday. When Ford moved to Viera, FL in March, she happened to move into the same complex that Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez lives in during spring training. Gonzalez met Ford and became inspired by her story of overcoming a degenerative neuro-muscular disorder and speaking out against bullying across the country. The parents I agree can help however, some bullies come from a home where bullying is taught- then what? If it is how you were raised, then somewhere something has to be done to break the cycle.   more ›
