Blue Devils Make Fashion Statement at State Finals

Lake Fenton wrestlers bleach their hair blond for tournament, so does first round opponent.

Competing in the Team State Wrestling Finals tournament has been known to cause nerves, butterflies and all types of anxiety.

The wrestling team, however, avoided all the stress and decided to replace it with fun.

The Blue Devils appeared at the Friday with nearly all members of the team supporting bleach blond hair.

"We just wanted to do something different," said senior Zach Corcoran. "We are having fun, we are on a mission, but we are having fun doing it. We just wanted to keep the nerves out and have fun. We forced some kids to do it."

The only problem was team members had some indecision between blue hair and blond hair. Some had dyed their hair blue, before the final decision to go blond was made.

"They had to bleach it like three times, so their hair is probably going to fall out," Corcoran said. "If you look real close, their hair turned lime green and pink. It's hilarious."

The team also believed the same hairstyle helped create team spirit. Their first round opponent, Otsego had the same idea, however, and also had blond hair.

"We wanted to go out with some kind of fashion and style," said senior Drew Morris. "It was fun."

Lake Fenton kept loose before its first match as well.

"The kids are working hard, but it's almost like they are giddy and having fun," said Lake Fenton coach Vance Corcoran. "You can take these kids anywhere and they can't not have a good time. That's the kind of group they are. All the other kids are rolling on the mat getting ready and my kids are out there eating. They do their own thing, but they know what they have to do."

A few nerves did stir up during the grand march, however, where the teams parade around the stadium before the national anthem.

Zach Corcoran had the honor of carrying the Michigan flag.

"That gave me chills," he said. "You always see good kids walking around with the flag and you say 'I wish I was that kid.' I got to be that kid this time. It was fun."

Morris had made the march at the individual finals, but said marching with the team topped it.

"Being with the team and the same guys you've been with all year made it great," he said. "It was different. It gave me butterflies."
