Fenton's Pedestrian Ordinance Receives Recognition from Countywide Coalition

Save & Active Genesee for Everyone (SAGE) coalition praises ordinance.

Fenton City Council members and officials imagine a Downtown Fenton bustling with pedestrian traffic. They can foresee a near future in which visitors and residents alike can find a place to park downtown and then easily walk from having lunch at the to shopping at , then Billmeier Camera, and then on to dinner at the .

The Fenton City Council took a step toward this future recently with the passage of an ordinance that gives . The legislation was recently praised by the Save & Active Genesee for Everyone (SAGE) coalition, a collaboration of local advocates working together to support active living initiatives throughout the county.

“It is clear that you and other City of Fenton leaders understand how community design can impact health and quality of life,” wrote SAGE in a letter addressed to City Manager Lynn Markland. “Your recent ordinance adoption is helping to make Fenton a more vibrant community. This ordinance is a wonderful addition to the city’s ‘Be Closer’ campaign.”

The Pedestrian Crosswalk Ordinance was adopted on August 22, 2011 and became effective on September 25, 2011. According to the ordinance, pedestrians will have the right-of-way at all marked crosswalks without traffic signals, including the newly crosswalks on North Leroy in Downtown Fenton.

“We’re very proud to pass this pedestrian ordinance that supports a more walkable downtown,” said Mayor Sue Osborn. “There are so many exciting developments on the horizon for Downtown Fenton, and this will only encourage the success of each one.”
